Something's different.
It always was,
I could see it
from the start.
Exactly what
I couldn't say,
but it made me
an Outcast.

I started to tell
when ten Barbie clones
gushed on and on and on
and on about Ken
and mine didn't join
for I was still sewing her dress
as child-goddesses looked on
and gave impatient looks.

I could sense it
on the playground
a boy said he'd be Raphael
and use sais
and my look
was as blank as his
when I said I'd be Leonardo
and draw a picture.

I could feel it
prickling, sickening,
as I listened to my peers gossip,
twittery girls with clown makeup,
as I, walking solitary in the hall,
pondered the implications
of cloning, time travel,
and temporal paradox.

It hurt me
saddened me
when I heard Jacques,
the idol with shadow hair,
talk to his friends,
and the most significant thing
to come out of his mouth
was "dude."

It was cold
in the classroom,
at seventy-six degrees,
as I sat with the teachers
and discussed chlorophyll.
Sixteen faces turned
from playing Smash Brothers
to stare.

I touched on it
when I turned
as the librarian called,
said my name from the counter,
and told me my book came.
The smile in her eyes,
level gaze meeting mine
without condescension.

I found it
in a room
talking with you,
and you understood,
looked at me,
and we knew...
We weren't alone.
We were fellow Outcasts.

Author's Comments

I was talking to a friend earlier today, about each of our experiences with peers and school.

This came of it. It grabbed me with an unholy fervor and I had to do it up straightaway.

pic done in openCanvas again.

poem isn't much of a poem in the traditional rhyming sense... but it wanted to be written freeform with the lines like this, and wouldn't let me call it prose.

Very good piece..... And if you are to be considered an outcast... Well, then there are far too few of them around. ;)

Im happy to see you have not lost your nobility tord your true self and the respect you had for the powere and knolege you have, I miss you teribly and wish to see you soon, ill be home for quarter break in 5 days time, I cant wait to see you, I will get you off your computer and out of the house, your parental unit will be happy I did. Ill call when I get home. I love the pic, of corce with my rotten mind it looks like somthing entierly diferant if it were not for the poem I would tern it askew in my dirty mind, look at it hard, youll see what I mean, hint, "its in the look"

Um...I'd just like to suggest that your weekend plans be kept to private e-mail and out of the public comments here. Comment boxes are for just that: comments on the art itself.

And if you're seeing something "dirty" in this pic, I suggest you look elsewhere for your jollies. I don't think Sail is interested in Liz that way, and I also don't think that either of them would appreciate the insinuation. Please try not to take a sweet picture about finding friendship and twist it. But if you must, try to keep it to yourself.

And so not to break my own rule...love the poem and the pic, Sail. Cheers from someone who was teased about being "The Brain" all through elementary school.
